As two events (an escaped prisoner and phone outages) showed this week, the district uses SchoolMessenger for email, voice, and SMS communications during emergencies (as well as non-emergencies such as snow days/late TARTA buses and important districtwide communications).

Depending upon the preferences you selected in SchoolMessenger, you received those messages this week via email, as an SMS message, or both.

The options available to you vary by platform (email and phone), such as specifying which numbers the district calls or sends SMS messages to and which email addresses receive messages. The district encourages parents to periodically review their SchoolMessenger settings. This factsheet explains how to log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal, find your SchoolMessenger account, and make the changes.

It is important to remember that PowerSchool is the hub for information about your child (grades, schedules) as well as your contact information (cell phones, work phones, email addresses). The information you place in PowerSchool feeds into SchoolMessenger, which is where you choose the options for receiving emergency and non-emergency messages. (Parents also make the communication choices for their children’s email addresses and phone numbers listed in SchoolMessenger.)

Here is an example of an option you can set: School-delay or cancellation messages may be sent as early as 6:30 a.m. If you do not want your home phone to ring that early, opt-out of the message category “Non-School Hours Emergency” for that number by unchecking the box next to its category. You may instead prefer to receive a text message at that number for that category.
