Girls' varsity 2019 TAAC champs

Congratulations to the girls’ varsity cross-country team (pictured above), which won their third consecutive Toledo Area Athletic Conference title last weekend (Oct. 12) during the annual meet. It was the first meet the girls’ won all year, and it helped them achieve a team goal they set at the start of the season.

“This season, we found a lot of individual success from meet to meet, where girls were earning medals or ribbons, but as a team we had not won any meets,” said Coach Tyler Fairchild. “We were constantly missing one or two people, whether due to a soccer game, going to a wedding or just getting the flu. Even at TAAC, we were missing our number three and four runners, but were still able to come away with the victory.”

“At the beginning of the season, I had the girls write what they wanted as a personal goal and as a team goal,” he said. “The overall team goal was winning the TAAC as the team goal, and they did that.”

The boys represented the school well, too, finishing second to Maumee Valley Country Day School.

The results at the TAAC Championship determine whether athletes are named to the All-TAAC squads. Earning First-Team honors for the girls were freshman Elanora Smith (23:09.4), sophomore Meredith Greeley (23:20.7), and junior Anjali McGrath (23:23.7). Earning Second-Team honors were freshmen Annika Padhye (25:27.1) and Celia Miller (25:51.2).

Earning First-Team honors for the boys were junior Keefer McClure (17:16.1) and senior Rohit (Mukherjee (18:41.8). Earning Second-Team honors were seniors Graham Tunis (18:48.6) and Seth Niemann (19:04.9). All four finished in the top 12.

Coach Fairchild said the achievements during the TAAC Championship began in June, as the athletes began to get ready for the season. “The athletes who took the time out of their summer break to run with the team saw the most success,” he said.

He also credited assistant coach Jeremy Nixon for the team’s success. “He sets high expectations for the athletes day in and day out and makes sure that they are doing their best,” he said.

Good luck to the runners participating in districts this morning at the Findlay-area Campus of Owens Community College.
