School-day changes planned as COVID-19 numbers rise

The following email communication was sent Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020, by Dr. Fineske to all OH parents and guardians

Good evening, OH Parents and Guardians:

As we complete our 12th week of instruction in this most unusual school year, I want to share an important change coming to our buildings' instructional schedules. This change is being adopted for three main reasons:

  • COVID-19 cases in Lucas County continue to rise.
  • As a result, the number of remote-learning students continues to fluctuate greatly, placing greater academic-planning pressure on OH teachers.
  • The arrival of colder weather means more lunch and recess activities moving indoors and the start of winter sports. This translates into an increased demand for COVID-19 cleaning as more people spend time in our academic and public spaces (hallways, gyms, main entrances).

Starting next week at the Junior/Senior High School and in December at the Elementary School leading up to Winter Break, students will be released early from normal in-person instruction every Wednesday at lunch (see table below). These changes will provide extra time for our teachers to plan for both remote and in-person lessons and allow maintenance teams to further deep-clean our two buildings.

Here's how "Early Release Wednesdays" works through Dec. 18:

On designated days (see table below), students will be dismissed from buildings at the start of the lunch period (11:10 a.m.). They will go home for lunch and then spend the balance of the school day completing required remote-learning activities. No new instruction by teachers will occur during this time. Teachers will communicate these activities in advance so families can plan accordingly.

NOTE: We know this decision likely presents extra planning challenges to OH families, especially those with younger children. That is why we are delaying the program's start at the Elementary School.

Early Release Wednesdays for the remainder of 2020
Elementary School Jr./Sr. High School
Wednesday, Dec. 2 Wednesday, Nov. 18
Wednesday, Dec. 9 Wednesday, Dec. 2
Wednesday, Dec. 16 Wednesday, Dec. 9

As Winter Break (Dec. 19-Jan. 3) approaches, our teams will assess the plan's success to determine whether to modify and/or continue it. We encourage you to please prepare as it may be likely "Early Release Wednesdays" will carry over into 2021.

I am amazed at our shared success so far this school year. Teachers, parents, students, the community: We all have adopted new ways of thinking and behaving for the greater good. That commitment has allowed us to be among a small group of districts statewide still delivering daily in-person instruction. It could not have happened without contributions from EVERYONE.

Thank you so much for your understanding and commitment to our district. Together, we continue to make Ottawa Hills Local Schools the best school district in Ohio.
