Ottawa Hills Local Schools: No. 1 in Toledo area

Ottawa Hills Local Schools has been named the top school district in the Toledo area by national research company Niche. The “2021 Best School” rankings compared districts in Lucas and Wood counties as well as southeast Michigan. This is the second consecutive year Ottawa Hills has been ranked No. 1.
 
“Students, teachers, and parents work hard every day to create and sustain excellence,” said Superintendent Dr. Adam Fineske. “We are always honored to receive recognition for those efforts.”
 
In addition, Ottawa Hills High School was named the No. 1 high school in the Toledo area. In addition to its overall score of A+, the school received the No. 1 ranking locally in three other categories: Best Teachers, Best College Prep (Public), and Best High School for STEM. (It was named the 10th best in Ohio for STEM.)

16 teachers, staff honored with state's Edison Award for STEM achievements

Sixteen teachers and staff from Ottawa Hills Local Schools have received The Governor’s Thomas Edison Award. Ottawa Hills was the only district in northwest Ohio selected for the honor.

The annual award recognizes excellence in STEM education and student research during the prior school year. The Ohio Academy of Science, which runs the program, recognized 37 school districts and 464 teachers statewide.

“This is a tremendous honor and recognizes the daily commitment made by these teachers and staff to our students,” said Ben McMurray, principal of Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School. “Their dedication to science and student development goes beyond the classroom and helps define the high science standards we have as a district.”

OH again earns Shaw Memorial School Award

Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School was one of only 14 high schools statewide this year to earn the Harold C. Shaw Memorial School Award. The award is the highest achievement possible for schools competing at State Science Day. OH has now received the honor for two consecutive years.

This year, 258 schools (and 800 students) participated; the event was conducted virtually because of COVID-19. There were two ways for schools to earn the honor:

  • have at least four students receive a “Superior” rating from judges for their science presentation
  • have at least four projects with 80 percent of the students receiving a “Superior” and no “Good” ratings.

Ottawa Hills High School: No. 1 in Ohio!

Ottawa Hills High School is now the No. 1 high school in Ohio, according to the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings released today.

The survey places the school as the 92nd-best high school in the United States out of nearly 18,000 ranked. Both scores are up from last year, when Ottawa Hills High School was ranked No. 5 in Ohio and 136th nationally.

In the “Math and Reading Proficiency Rank” category, Ottawa Hills High School was tied for No. 1 in the United States.

“We are thrilled to be considered the No. 1 high school in Ohio and among the top 100 in the United States,” said Principal Ben McMurray. “Our faculty and staff work incredibly hard to ensure our students feel valued, challenged, and supported. Our school’s mission encourages students to be well-rounded, creative, compassionate, and curious. We are extremely grateful for the strong partnership with our parents and community.”

Ottawa Hills High School has 322 students in grades 9-12.

Newsweek names High School a top STEM school

Newsweek today named Ottawa Hills High School as the second-best high school in Ohio for STEM and No. 61 nationally among all high schools.

Ottawa Hills HIgh School also was ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 43 nationally among all public high schools. The news magazine, working with STEM.org, released its rankings of 5,000 top high schools today on National STEM Day. (STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, math). The November 15 special double issue is available on newsstands now and includes coverage of the top 500 STEM high schools, including Ottawa Hills. The full list of 5,000 top STEM high schools is available at Newsweek.com.

“At Ottawa Hills, students are exposed to a wide variety of STEM courses and extracurricular offerings that encourage them to approach critical-thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving in unique ways,” said Ben McMurray, the Junior/Senior High School principal.

District earns all A’s on Report Card for 5th straight year

The Ohio Department of Education today awarded Ottawa Hills Local Schools all A’s on the state School Report Card. The grades are for the 2018-2019 school year; the district now has earned all A’s for five consecutive years.

Not only did the district receive an overall “A” grade, but so did Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School and Ottawa Hills Elementary School.

“We are extremely proud of today's Report Card. It validates the team approach we take toward education, an approach that requires the participation of the community, parents, teachers, and students,” said Superintendent Dr. Adam Fineske. “As important as the Report Card is, it is only one way we measure our success as a district. There are countless other ways we celebrate our success as well.”

District ranked No. 1 regional, county school district

Ottawa Hills Local Schools is the No. 1 school district in the Toledo area and Lucas County, according to research company Niche.

Niche calculated its rankings using dozens of public data sets and millions of reviews. Factors used in its K-12 rankings include state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, SAT/ACT scores, teacher quality, and public school district ratings.

In addition to its top Toledo area and Lucas County ranking, Ottawa Hills ranked high in all statewide categories measured by Niche:

  • Best school districts: 8 out of 608 (top 1 percent).
  • Best places to teach: 33 out of 608 (top 5 percent).
  • Safest school districts: 39 out of 608 (top 6 percent).
  • Best school districts for athletes: 69 out of 608 (top 11 percent).
  • Districts with the best teachers: 80 out of 608 (top 13 percent).

U.S. News names High School a Top-Five in Ohio

Congratulations to the students, families, faculty, and staff at Ottawa Hills High School! U.S. News & World Report has ranked them as the fifth-best high school in Ohio for the second year in a row.

As important, the building moved up significantly nationally. It is now ranked as the 136th best high school in the United States, up from 258 last year. U.S. News collects data on more than 23,000 public U.S. high schools; it then uses that data to rank 17,245 schools in five categories, including performance on state-required tests, graduation, and college preparation.

Among all schools ranked, our high school finished tied for first in the “Math and Reading Proficiency” category, which ranks using aggregated scores on state assessments that students may be required to pass for graduation.
