Ottawa Hills Recognized Among Best High Schools in America by Newsweek Magazine
Ottawa Hills High School was among the top public high schools in the nation according to an analysis featured in the June 15, 2010 edition of Newsweek magazine, “America’s Best High Schools.” Ottawa Hills was included in a listing of over 1600 high schools across the nation that qualified for the designation.
Public schools were ranked according to a ratio called the Challenge Index devised by Jay Matthews, Newsweek contributing editor and Washington Post reporter. The Challenge Index (CI) is a ratio determined by dividing the number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students in the school in 2009 by the number of graduating seniors. The CI ratio must be 1.0 or higher for a school to be included on the list.
Schools ranked have the strongest AP or IB programs in the country. Each school is in the top 5% of all high schools measured in this manner. Participation in these programs are indicators of a school’s efforts to encourage students to excel and to prepare for college by taking a challenging, rigorous curriculum. Ottawa Hills qualified for the list each year from 1998 – 2009.
Currently, Ottawa Hills High School offers courses and AP exams in the following subject areas: English Literature and Composition, English Language and Composition, French Language, Spanish Language, Calculus AB, U. S. History, U.S. Government and Politics, European History, Physics B, Music Theory, Studio Art: 2-D Design, Studio Art: 3-D Design, and Chemistry. Students have also successfully completed exams in Statistics, Calculus BC, and Computer Programming in the past.
