Ottawa Hills Students Participate in School Competitions of the National Geographic Bee
Twenty students from Ottawa Hills Elementary School and six students from Ottawa Hills Junior High recently participated in the school level competition of the National Geographic Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

To qualify for the local Ottawa Hills Geographic Bee, students in grades 4-6 volunteered to participate in the competition by completing a written test. The top students then participated in rounds of questions in the preliminary competition held at the elementary school on January 7 and 8. Ottawa Hills LEAP teacher Kathy Wemmer organized and moderated the elementary school bee.

Patrick Arnold was the elementary school champion and has taken a written test that could qualify him for the state geography bee. Alexandra Richards finished in second place. Third place was a three-way tie among Rahul Bais, Nathan Card, and Noah Dewhirst.

Six junior high students in grades 7 and 8 also participated and competed in the geography bee. Social Studies teachers Kate Baker and Sean Mercer organized and conducted the junior high bee. Ben Dayton was the winner and has also taken a written test that could qualify him for the state geography bee. Kathleen Johnson was second place, and third place was Haidar Bin Hamid.

Each student puts forth tremendous effort to answer the questions. Many of the students prepared for the bee by taking the daily Geographic Bee Challenge on the National Geographic website (www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee).
